Our September snow storm melted , and then came the beautiful Fall colors. The color started high on the tops of the mountains, and then slowly crept down the hills until the whole camp was enveloped in gold, orange, pink, and red. It was as though a painter had dipped his brush in his paint and created a master piece over night. What once was shades of green, were now the brilliant colors of His masterpiece.<br />

With the cooler days of Fall, and the absence of so many campers, there was more time to enjoy the beauty around us--time to hike those trails that wind all over the camp. A time for the Sisters to have "girl" time.</div>

From the first of August we did not have a single week without a rain storm or some disturbance. But, we awoke one morning in September and were surprised with a world of white awaiting us. It just ended being Summer--now Winter?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Even the deer were a little bewildered by the blanket of white covering everything.<br />

Something special happened that was tender and dear to me. As we walked as a family around the lake, all of us were busy visiting and talking and seeing all the "things" around the lake. As John walked he carefully chose long pieces of grass and sticks until he had picked just the special bunch that he wanted. This he held tightly in his hands.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUw1z2F7iBhFUxbJx-9lVo4XwekSIY_Gb_UWMoMkVeAuz8gd2Fa_ie3vlTl5_neR-gQ9zWOUkOrteZLEhAk2jBh4paZduRuG7J485Ag9QMLuWZ0F32Gb7RHH6vRl8GkJurF5YSlsTbl2U/s1600/DSCN4052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUw1z2F7iBhFUxbJx-9lVo4XwekSIY_Gb_UWMoMkVeAuz8gd2Fa_ie3vlTl5_neR-gQ9zWOUkOrteZLEhAk2jBh4paZduRuG7J485Ag9QMLuWZ0F32Gb7RHH6vRl8GkJurF5YSlsTbl2U/s320/DSCN4052.JPG" width="228" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Grandpa seemed to be part of the project, but it was John who held so tightly to his special "bunch".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The walk around the lake was about a mile, and one would think the "bunch" might be tossed a side as the walk became long. Not so. We arrived back at the dock and he still proudly carried his treasure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNdIp8bSZNu266DwYmuX9b74EGAAXd8iszZ5pXEHmtDxbRYLUa9fNEuk1PBho8aox2mvOyITecqWdrN4fAp4QJ0I1rXWO6yfWdFUQYmOZLlAjNHfIpulAmpLbAF5jjlrhfCu2IW3UCwOo/s1600/09-DSCN4060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNdIp8bSZNu266DwYmuX9b74EGAAXd8iszZ5pXEHmtDxbRYLUa9fNEuk1PBho8aox2mvOyITecqWdrN4fAp4QJ0I1rXWO6yfWdFUQYmOZLlAjNHfIpulAmpLbAF5jjlrhfCu2IW3UCwOo/s320/09-DSCN4060.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now it became time to go. Time to get in the car and head for home. Not convenient to carry a large bunch of grass into the car. What to do? I suggested to John that we could put the grass in a special place in the bushes where it would be safe and no one would bother it. I could see him thinking carefully about this. He hesitated and then hurried with his grass, not to the bushes, but quickly climbed up into the watch tower at the lake, and placed his treasure in the safest place he could think of. Tears came to my eyes. I assured him it would be safe there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next day, as the staff gathered to start another busy day, I went up into the tower. There, it was as he had placed it, safe and sound. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFKXiGCnkQsDEy0viKkjdLq9KQ9Em3s1wfwzhneAAEnQ7qEahmDtxRsz2aJfk8LupYXW9TC1ev_py3Y0kwhenLsYN1RxEgpo5KwYO37Z6zgVm6_xcWblXhaCx0vbrv3uPIBqDRBzx2inc/s1600/DSCN4065.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFKXiGCnkQsDEy0viKkjdLq9KQ9Em3s1wfwzhneAAEnQ7qEahmDtxRsz2aJfk8LupYXW9TC1ev_py3Y0kwhenLsYN1RxEgpo5KwYO37Z6zgVm6_xcWblXhaCx0vbrv3uPIBqDRBzx2inc/s320/DSCN4065.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I picked it up. I held it proudly and reverently in my hands. Something so special and dear to my grandson. Something he had so carefully and thoughtfully placed. I love you John. I love the way you see things a bit deeper and more gently than I do in my busy world. I placed your "treasure" in an even safer place. A place where it would not be walked on or torn apart by others, but where it would be loved and be a haven for small critters at the Lake.</div>

They can come on weekends when all the other campers are gone. All summer we watched as other families came, and then it was our turn .On labor day weekend, my daughter, Tracy and her family were visiting from Arizona. They had come for an event in Paul's family, but were able to find time to include us in their visit. They joined us first of all for church.<br />

Show!One of the highlights of the camp season is the annual Camp Talent Show. It is the climax of all the activities held on the mountain. Each of the teams come up with a presentation, everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. Imagination and creativity are superb. <br />
The Lake team led off the evening with our version of synchronized swimming. Here are a few pics of our team.<br />

This is just a smattering of the talent, but it was a great night of laughter, humor, and just of love and friendship. A great way to end the year.</div>

I always thought when you serve a mission for the Lord will protect you from harm or accident and that time spent on the mission would be pleasant and free from trials. I learned that that is not so. Perhaps I learned that trials still come but the ability to bear them is greatly increased. Many of the missionaries had great physical and emotional trials while here at Heber Valley Camp.<br />
One of these very special Elders was Elder Monty Hadley. He and his wife were at the camp last year also. While he was there he had developed a cancer, a sarcoma that was in his buttocks area. He had to have surgery during his time at camp, but as soon as he was able, they were right back at camp fulfilling their duties on public safety. One would never know anything was wrong. He always had a smile and a handshake, never a complaint. They were named the team leaders for Safety for the 2013 season.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
They came back to camp this year with great optimism. This was going to be the very best year! He started the season with his usual smile, handshake, and friendship to all. He did sit on his special pillow, but life was good. He brought sunshine and love wherever he was.<br />
But, alas, his trial was not over. The cancer returned. This time it had started to spread. His goal was to finish his mission with his sweetheart. Two weeks before camp would end, he had to leave the mountain for good. They had to load up the trailer and pull it down to their home in Taylor, Utah.<br />
I kept getting a prompting, "gather all the missionaries along the road by the welcome center and wave goodbye to this wonderful missionary." But I kept putting it aside--too much trouble, it would never work, etc. But the prompting kept coming. Do I do it? Naw! But at the potluck on Sunday it just kept coming back. I asked a couple sisters as I was standing at the potluck what they thought of the idea. They loved it. OK, lets make this work. Permission was granted by Elder Nielson, and the word was spread. Sister Robbins said she would be the signal caller. The signal was "Come,Come Ye Saints". She would give us as much warning as possible, and at the signal all the missionaries would come to the welcome center and line the roadway.<br />
Monday morning came. The whole camp was ready and waiting for the call. It came! From every direction missionaries stopped their tasks, jumped on their ATV's and headed for the welcome center. The safety team parked everyone, and the gathering took place. A group had painted a large banner that stretched across the road that said, "We love you Elder and Sister Hadley". Sister Boyse passed out the words to "Happy Trails to You" (he was a cowboy). Sister Balls helped us practice it, and we were ready.<br />

<br />
Soon the truck pulling their RV rounded the corner and pulled between the lines of missionaries. Tears were flowing as we sang, cheered, waved, and shook hands with these wonderful missionaries who had given so much. Prayers were in our hearts. They pulled down the mountain, tears in their eyes.<br />

<br />
On October 9th, Elder Hadley passed away, one day before the official end of the mission. He had served to the end. His funeral was held, October 14th. I went to the funeral. At least 1/2 of the people there were Heber Valley Camp missionaries, people he had showed so much love to. He was one of the Lord's great men here on this earth, and he is now one of the great men up there in heaven.<br />
At the funeral it was mentioned that the morning he left camp he would never forget all the missionaries lining the road waving and saying goodbye. That brought tears to my eyes, and a silent thank you to Heavenly Father for giving me those promptings and the courage to act on them.<br />

Our assignment was the "Lake Team". There were 9 couples on our team. As we worked together each day at our task of launching over 500 boaters a day, we became very close friends. These are friendships that will last forever.. Here are the members of our team.</span><br />

Friday afternoons on the mountain saw a transformation take place. The girls would board their busses; some sleepy, some with tears in their eyes, and some with shouts of joy as they head home to soft, comfy beds, and long, luxurious showers. We would wave goodbye to them often with tears in our eyes.<br />
The magical hour of 2pm would come, and with it a stream of cars coming through the welcome center and down the parkway, These cars were filled with families and groups coming in to use the camp on the weekends. Families of all shapes and sizes would come for reunions. Groups of every description would come for retreats, father and sons outings, relief society retreats, youth conferences, etc. The 2500 teenage girls would be traded for 2500 new campers ranging from newborn babies to young adults to grandmas and grandpas.<br />
Down at the Lake the squeals of teenage girls were traded for the sounds of small children and babies. Children filled the sandbox and sandcastles were soon created.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Families and groups brought many challenges, they were much less structured than the girls. They would pretty much show up whenever, (not on time). But they wanted the same thing, the opportunity to experience this beautiful lake, have fun, and have opportunities to bond together. One grandmother celebrated her 92nd birthday by going in a paddle boat. A couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there on the lake. Young men tipped their canoes in their efforts to prove how "expert" they were. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When the day was done we would return to our RV"s knowing we had done a good job, that our boaters had been safe, they had a wonderful time, and we had brought some joy into their lives. </div>

Sometimes at camp, we have spare time. During our spare time a project we can be actively involved with is making things for what are called "Humanitarian projects". The camp is closely associated with a group called "Hearts Knit Together". They put together kits for women and children who are victims of domestic violence and are forced to flee with their homes and arrive at shelters often with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Each child is given a bag with a blanket, a stuffed animal, a hat, a scarf a book, or perhaps a game. Older children are given supplies for school. Women are given hats, scarfs, shampoo, etc. Bags are made up of baby supplies, etc. Each month they distribute over 2000 kits.<br />
I knew of the project since I was here last year, so during the winter I gathered animals and books from the Kohls for Kids products and added fleece for a blanket to match. So I came to camp prepared with my stuff. One of our sisters, Pam Taylor, here at the camp fell and broke her hip in the first few weeks . I visited her as a friend and a nurse and discovered that she loved to crochet . She needed projects to keep her busy, and so we bonded together and I provided the books and "critters". She made the most darling hats and scarves for each set, and even a scarf for the critters. Through our efforts we made over 10 kits. It was wonderful. I gathered a new friend. She was able to do things while she was not able to get around, and the children were blessed with our gifts.<br />

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Thursday at the Lake, the winds came. In a few minutes, what
started out as a brisk summer breeze, turned into a mean gusty wind. The water
that was covered with ripples, now was an angry lake with white capping waves.
The young women and leaders were caught off guard and soon were swept toward
the rocks of the dam. There was no possible way to get to the dock or landing
beach. The two rescue boats were helpless against the wind and found themselves
against the rocks.</span></div>

is always hope. Just look to the beacon on the shore. Head towards that safe

The first time was high up on a ridge. A tall pine tree was struck. The lightening hit the top of the tree, completely knocking the top off the tree. It then went down the tree and into the ground, causing the tree to burn and smolder. The smoke from the tree was noticed on the ridge, and then missionaries went into the area and found the burning tree before it could spread. We rode up on our ATV's and saw the "lightening tree" several days later. This is part of the tree that was blown off the top.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
About a month later, during high fire season, another tree was struck by lightening. This time the bolt struck the tree, splitting it from top to bottom, only this time there was no burning. The camp was really protected because if it had started burning a huge fire could have been started. We went over to see the tree and marvel at the power and force of nature.</div>

All over the state fires were being started by lightening strikes. The miracle of these two strikes was that a fire was not started. It would have meant that 2500 campers would have to be evacuated. We were certainly blessed and kept safe.<br />

</a>One of the wonders of being on this mission, high in the mountains, is the ability to be surrounded by the Lord's creations every day. Being a "critter lover" this has been a pure delight. To be be able to open my door or pull up the blinds of my windows and not know if it will be a deer, a moose, a hummingbird, or a ground squirrel that will greet you. .<br />

When we go to our assignment down at the lake, we marvel at it's beauty, but also at all the critters that come to greet us; ducks, geese, deer, and the moose. The beaver come in the evening, but leave the evidence of a busy night to greet us-another tree has bit the dust.<br />

The amazing thing is that the animals and birds seem to sense that this is a special place and that we are special and they don't run from us or our camper guests. I think we marvel at them, and they marvel at us.</div>
<br />
I just need to remember. . . All creatures great and small, our Lord God made them all.grandmasuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15443218027709147086noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492934369910302436.post-86364533951571258602013-09-18T22:23:00.001-06:002013-09-18T22:25:36.093-06:00A Camp Mystery.The tasks and the trials of being a missionary sometime seem a bit overwhelming. We had chosen a gift to give at the end of camp to each couple--a cute, dancing solar flower. But it seemed to us that some smiles and joy needed to be spread throughout the camp now-not at the end. We wanted to give this gift anonomously, but how to do it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEnYGg-9MJocsvJnuRe7V0jWhpRHjJwnmX2MP1uPPWgFaSrrFMQqDk4h4x2Z1kcqE2E5I4G-9AVxNWyPKrU5ZOSGIOTobYFWroMIdfatft4GD_U4qpUHuMnNHJaUmRtqDyaODnekIuchI/s1600/DSCN4181.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEnYGg-9MJocsvJnuRe7V0jWhpRHjJwnmX2MP1uPPWgFaSrrFMQqDk4h4x2Z1kcqE2E5I4G-9AVxNWyPKrU5ZOSGIOTobYFWroMIdfatft4GD_U4qpUHuMnNHJaUmRtqDyaODnekIuchI/s320/DSCN4181.JPG" width="284" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A plan started to take place. I would get up early, dress in my very generic hoodie and jeans, and drive very quietly to the area chosen for this delivery. I could only deliver about 3 or 4 each morning as many of the missionaries were early risers. I parked a short distance from the cabin or RV, covered my head with my hoodie, and then tiptoed as quietly as I could. I stooped down so I would not be seen, and then placed the little flower with its message on the doorstep, and then scurried away as quickly as I could.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It seemed morning was too risky, so I decided to do it after dark. This meant dressing in dark cothes (like a cat burgler),and taking a small flashlight so I could identify the right trailor. It meant scooting behind cars, around ATV's, ducking under windows, and leaving the little flower on the doorstep. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It took about 2 weeks to get them all delivered. It was so fun to hear the missionaries ask, "Look what I got! Do you have any idea who is doing it?" Even the camp newspaper had a picture of the little flower, with comment, "Who is the person behind the mystery flower?"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the end of the season, we wrote a poem saying,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>We were so excited</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>We just couldn't wait . . .</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>So we gave our little gift</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>Way ahead of the date.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em></em> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>It was so much fun to give-</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>Just a little solar flower,</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>As we snuck from cabins to RV's</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>At such late and early hours.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em></em> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>To place it on your door step-</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>To make your day a little brighter-</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>To bring smiles and make-</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>Your tasks and trials a little lighter.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em></em> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>So when you leave this mountain</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>And travel many miles,</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>Just glance at that little flower-</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>It's sure to bring more smiles.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We gave each couple this little poem, and a small gift. The mystery has now been solved.</div>

Well, here is our typical day. I love to get up earlier--about 6:30 am--Steve likes to sleep in to the last minute that he can, about 7:15. As soon as I am up, I slip on a pair of pants and a sweatshirt, my sandals, grab Old Glory and I have my moment with her. Up the pole she goes, I say my little pledge of allegiance, and my day has started. Morning is so beautiful. The air is cool, the flowers are blooming all around us . . .I just sometimes wish it came a little later.<br />
I come back to our RV, kneel and say my prayers. I have so much to be thankful for, health, strength, being here on this mission, my husband, family, being a member of this Church, and knowing Heavenly Father loves me. This is my time to talk to Him, ask for forgiveness and ask for His blessings. Before we start our day, Steve and I kneel together and have our couples prayer.<br />
Then there is breakfast, sharing our schedule for the day. Mostly our schedule is the same, but sometimes a few new things pop us. Then into our camp uniform . . green shirt or t-shirt with our logo, a pair of jeans, our missionary name tag, shoes, and our sun hats. Don't forget to clip on our keys, grab the camp radio, jump on our ATV's and we are off to the Lake.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVEX7fKD7EM3kT41aVvHNUJcN84qgCntwT1Eg7CNmNITQs9NEM53FQOnr7gULz9TRwsV6yj3Ba3kTbm6TXEybtkgEmGR9FhGn2csSLEfJEKBgoqZRj8fga57tbtfujaasZmfJcjkpEGP8/s1600/DSCN3014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVEX7fKD7EM3kT41aVvHNUJcN84qgCntwT1Eg7CNmNITQs9NEM53FQOnr7gULz9TRwsV6yj3Ba3kTbm6TXEybtkgEmGR9FhGn2csSLEfJEKBgoqZRj8fga57tbtfujaasZmfJcjkpEGP8/s320/DSCN3014.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Ist thing at the lake is our flag ceremony and our devotional. where each couple shares a spiritual thought and then we have a group prayer. Into action we go, putting the lake into order to receive those anxious boaters. Vests and paddles are put into place; life vests and rescue equipment into the pontoon boat and rubber raft; sand is blown out of the pavillion and tables and benches are washed; volley balls and horsehoes and sand toys are put in place; boat hooks placed on the dock and boats checked for water if there was rain during the night. All the canoes are turned over and made ready, and the paddle boats need to be dumped and wiped dry. (it is amazing how much water fills those boats in a rain storm).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf2mqxZH50wqUFTMFQlGMpzcqD9Ub6QwowjgP6PdqBs1kDYdxAJtkK3yHzMhpdVubOkr3YRfQVmB5yDd3zimLh5E55XdFis-klxinDQJfXd6HrlZrh6VaaqiFx83_AVxxlCQv-t_SvswM/s1600/DSCN2831.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf2mqxZH50wqUFTMFQlGMpzcqD9Ub6QwowjgP6PdqBs1kDYdxAJtkK3yHzMhpdVubOkr3YRfQVmB5yDd3zimLh5E55XdFis-klxinDQJfXd6HrlZrh6VaaqiFx83_AVxxlCQv-t_SvswM/s320/DSCN2831.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The CD player, rescue radio, and binoculars are placed in the tower, and finally the sound system is in place . With our whole team working together this process takes about 15 minutes (unless we have to dump water out of the boats). Now we are ready. Let them come.<br />
The young women and leaders or families arrive, eager and anxious to be out on the water. Vests are given to all the boaters. We can vest anyone from an infant up to very large adults. As we stand with our arms loaded with vests we often joke it is like being in Mexico selling our wares. <br />
<br />

<br />
An orientation and briefing is given and then they are loaded into their choice of paddle boat or canoe. The launching is quite the event. They are launched backwards into the lake so they have to paddle backwards and then turn around. It seems like one jumbled mess for a few minutes until everyone is headed forward into the lake.<br />

<br />
When the young women are here, after they are all launched we have a "2 minutes of silence" on the lake where everyone stops moving or talking and just quietly sit on the lake and listen and look and feel the love of their Savior and all the beauty that God has created. When that ends, they all join in singing the 1st verse of our camp song, "I feel my Savior's Love". This is a very special time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkTqn-nDOwCmetgb0KY8Zs6_vBGhHyMUC3h-_uM9HcKW__kwdU7P0gaDazHOSO7Ni4OpwqwYo8Lmc4-WXxuDLrRJerZa6pAZuWfHf6I29XQSTh9KtTZNSmmhE8f6XI3ToVfPLoxb2zKxo/s1600/DSCN3238.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkTqn-nDOwCmetgb0KY8Zs6_vBGhHyMUC3h-_uM9HcKW__kwdU7P0gaDazHOSO7Ni4OpwqwYo8Lmc4-WXxuDLrRJerZa6pAZuWfHf6I29XQSTh9KtTZNSmmhE8f6XI3ToVfPLoxb2zKxo/s320/DSCN3238.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then the fun and the crazies begin. There is racing, games, splashing, paddling, and just the fun of being on the water. Often there are deer along the sides of the lake, occasionally a moose, and always little families of ducks and geese. Some days we will go all day without a tip over, other days there are many. This puts the Sister in the tower, the missionaries on the rescue boats into action. The wet boaters are pulled from the water by the pontoon boat, and the <br />
canoe is rescued by the missionary in the rubber raft.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQnU4H3up36UMXLUDutbIkJEyvFGmVVrkskMyMB8cmPRKX02ushLLlH6ghfntV4uZuvqSJgHx0MZpw6dKoCKega9hZH_4xmvnNdaeSX0-GBHnJKDGlqUG6N3vQYFg6fJ0Us5-7HqbvkwY/s1600/DSCN3304.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQnU4H3up36UMXLUDutbIkJEyvFGmVVrkskMyMB8cmPRKX02ushLLlH6ghfntV4uZuvqSJgHx0MZpw6dKoCKega9hZH_4xmvnNdaeSX0-GBHnJKDGlqUG6N3vQYFg6fJ0Us5-7HqbvkwY/s320/DSCN3304.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
The tip over is often a fun, embarrasing moment for those envolved. Sometimes it is a scarry, cold, wet experience. They are wrapped in towels and brought to shore or often they choose to go back into their now uprighted canoe and continue their lake adventure.<br />
Between sessions we take a few minutes to get the boats ready for the next session, grab a drink, rest, check our next assignment, and then there they come, the next bunch of boaters. And then the routine is repeated--up to 6 times a day. We launch between 100-150 boaters on each session. We do have a lunch break and that is a welcome time. We jump on our ATV's and head back to our RV's for a bite to eat and a chance to just relax.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJi8RFd6Wc0DAxnNBbD1dGxOTfkfaITUbpnUIKD4LgodaN7YJAT9ahaNH3DK_F3s_hyL9DnmN8VkqaZa_-RCOFcZ1m-LOEM5dTwih-i_sE2nRFIoBS1J3L-6XrIPD9xm8SIRvSM5cbcRw/s1600/DSCN3522.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJi8RFd6Wc0DAxnNBbD1dGxOTfkfaITUbpnUIKD4LgodaN7YJAT9ahaNH3DK_F3s_hyL9DnmN8VkqaZa_-RCOFcZ1m-LOEM5dTwih-i_sE2nRFIoBS1J3L-6XrIPD9xm8SIRvSM5cbcRw/s320/DSCN3522.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
At the end of the day, all things we have put out to be ready, are now taken in and stored safe for the night. The boaters have all gone and the lake front returns to serenity and quiet. At home we do a huge variety of things; dinner, take a ride up on the higher mountain on ATV's, visit with other missionaries, eat dinner with young women's groups when we are invited, attend a fireside, watch the plentiful animals, enjoy spectacular sunsets, catch up on our emails, watch a good movie on our TV, say our prayers, and then just drop into bed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8JWdt26z_ZqKubv8UOlQfFigE-Epdl60JasRpX6pgZBDknDUx9yQlzCI2ZR9icFIXgI8bGtCIPm5e3jLtGq3beXB-A12J6r75_q6CF0KCU-y-eFviE_l3DVoooxycVlUY5adGykgV0AI/s1600/DSCN3047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8JWdt26z_ZqKubv8UOlQfFigE-Epdl60JasRpX6pgZBDknDUx9yQlzCI2ZR9icFIXgI8bGtCIPm5e3jLtGq3beXB-A12J6r75_q6CF0KCU-y-eFviE_l3DVoooxycVlUY5adGykgV0AI/s320/DSCN3047.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is just a typical day, but each day has its own uniqueness, because we are dealing with people, and people are unique and special. We fill so blessed to be spending this time here on the mountain, on this mission. We are so thankful that we have been blessed with health and the financial means to be able to do this.<br />

When one works on a lake launching campers into paddle boats and canoes there is one thing that is for certain . . . a certain percentage will tip over . . .and they do! We caution them in our orientation about tipping over. We give them wonderful guidelines on how to canoe and to avoid tip overs. But . . .it just happens. Over they go. There is no one factor, but it usually follows a pattern.<br />
<br />
1. First, they splash.<br />

The evidence of a busy day on the lake is displayed with honor on our horse shoe pit fence. There are the life vests of at least 9 tip overs. That makes about 27 rescued and brought to shore. It is one of the fun and interesting parts of our assignment. There are probably more adults that tip over than youth. Our record # of tip overs in one day is 12 canoes.<br />

Our first week is over. Now we look forward to another week of girls!</div>

Me and my flag? Well, it really isn't my flag, but let me tell you about it. Each area at the girls camp has its very own flagpole. For a week or so when we first came up on the mountain, our flag pole in our missionary park was empty and bare. No flag. That just wasn't right. So . . . I went down to the maintenance building and asked for a flag. They did not have one handy, but said they would find one. That evening, up raced an ATV with a Sister on it, with a flag. I was so excited! All my life I have loved the flag and have always loved flag ceremonies and saying the pledge of allegiance. Now I had my very own flag, to put up on the flag pole just in front of where we were camped.<br />
Now each morning the first thing I do is slip on some pants, a sweatshirt, some shoes, take the flag, and I walk in the early morning air to the flag pole and I put up the flag. I love this time alone with "my flag". I love clipping the flag to the rope, careful to make sure the blue and the stars are at the top. I enjoy raising it and seeing it unfold and furl out into the wind. After it is up and snugged into place, I step back and do my very own private pledge of allegiance, just me and my flag. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidcYzc7L8m2Vc3ouXMSS3mEjwXkohv-W-vThwebctHZHmWsixNSWs5VF1pI4aiF6cQmQ9JQfZR88zwGGhdDw5fIjzv949B3jhp2HJxYiH3hst0prpExOvrk1q42-3Vxp7qM45QmkN1BP8/s1600/DSCN2412.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidcYzc7L8m2Vc3ouXMSS3mEjwXkohv-W-vThwebctHZHmWsixNSWs5VF1pI4aiF6cQmQ9JQfZR88zwGGhdDw5fIjzv949B3jhp2HJxYiH3hst0prpExOvrk1q42-3Vxp7qM45QmkN1BP8/s320/DSCN2412.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
During the day I always look up to see if it is there, waving in the air, and it is. In the evening, just at dusk, I once again go to the flag pole and take it down. I then take it in and Steve and I fold it and place it where it will wait until it has the chance to fly from the top of the pole the next morning. <br />
Heavenly Father helped create our country and government, and this flag just reminds me of His love for me and for all of us. I am so thankful for this opportunity to love and show respect for "my flag", and of this special time to be just "Me and My Flag!"<br />

grandmasuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15443218027709147086noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492934369910302436.post-27127605442840853812013-06-02T22:27:00.002-06:002013-06-02T22:45:11.206-06:00We Spoke in Church! The previous Sunday as we stood in line for the Sunday Potluck, one of our friends, Elder Betourney approached us with a big smile on his face. After a friendly "hello" he extended his hand in which he had a white piece of paper. I took it and opened it, and there was written, "You have been asked to speak next Sunday in Sacrament Meeting. Use the talk by Elder Hales "Stand Strong in Holy Places". I passed the paper on to Elder Brown, and then Elder Betourney sort of quickly disappeared into the throng of missionaries.<br />
We had escaped being asked to speak last year, so we knew this would probably happen, but I don't think one is ever prepared. So we started preparing. I found that my thoughts traveled more to the definition of "what a holy place is, and what the holy places in my life are." I actually enjoyed researching and finding what others had shared on this topic. It is the Youths' theme for this year, so alot has been spoken on this subject.<br />
Here are a few of my thoughts that I shared: Sister Ann Dibbs stated, "A Holy Place is not confined to a geographical place or location. It can also include moments in time, moments when the Holy Ghost testifies to us. Moments when we feel Heavenly Father's love, or when we receive an asnwer to our prayer." She also said, "I believe anytime you have the courage to stand for what is right, especially in situations where no one else is willing to do so, you are creating a Holy Place.<br />
Holy Places are ofen found where least expected. A number of years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to travel to Istanbul, Turkey on a humanitarian mission with a group of LDS doctors and nurses. As part of our trip we had time to vbe tourists and vist some of the oldest and grandest religious structures in the city. They were ancient, decorated in<br />
beautiful handmade tiles and gold. They were beautiful and very historical. On Studay morning our group went to churh. It was held in a very plain and simple building. We climbed a very narrow, plain stairway and entered a simple apartment that had been made into a small chapel. As we entered, a young man was playing familiar church hymns on a simple key board. My heart was touched and that room became a Holy Place.<br />
<br />
Anywhere you are where the Spirit is present can be a Holy Place.<br />
<br />
Holy places can be different for each of us. Some of my Holy Places are: 1) the foot of the bed where Elder Brown and I kneel in morning and evening prayer. 2) My garden . . .as I dig, plant and care for my garden, I feel in touch with the Spirit of the Lord. 3) As I walk hand in hand in the temple with my sweet companion. 4) The Neonatal Unit at the University of Utah. I felt as though I was the hands of God caring for these new, tiny spirits. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
5) This one might seem strange, but my computer at times becomes a Holy Place as I search and find ancestors. I often feel my fingers are guided and directed to the right websites where the information is stored.<br />
6) Anytime I am in nature and take the time o stop and observe the beauty and wonders of his creations I am so filled with love for my Heavenly Father.<br />
<br />
Our challenge is to find and recognize these Holy Places in our lives, and then to stand strong and be not moved, for it is when we are in these Holy Places that we become holy.<br />
<br />
1) We need to recognize the spirit in our lives. We need to TAKE TIME, SLOW DOWN, TURN OFF, and OPEN UP. We need to be willing to quiet our lives. Turn off the constant barrage from the media, and open up and read the scriptures and words from our general authorities.<br />
2) Return often to our Holy Places.<br />
3) Stand strong together. The huge redwood trees are able to stand strong and tall because they interlock their roots with all the trees around them.<br />

<br />
<br />
It is in the Holy Places in our lives that we will be safe and protected.<br />

Steve had been sick all week with a viral chest infection. He coughed constantly, was weak, and felt so exhausted. But with faith and prayer he was able to give his talk and bear such a strong testimony of how he puts Christ #1 in his life. Not once during his talk or while the meeting was being conducted did he cough. Afterwards the symptoms returned and he was back to bed. The Lord really does hear our prayers.grandmasuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15443218027709147086noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492934369910302436.post-40983287288828785882013-05-26T22:46:00.001-06:002013-05-26T22:46:32.970-06:00IT'S MAY 19TH AND IT IS SNOWING!What a surprise to wake up early on Sunday morning, put up the window shades and the world outside is white, and the snow is falling! It was beautiful, but so discouraging to see our cold weather go on and on. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6g9OKUmop-nzR9vlVo8YdKkPaK-AR4L5KuaToEEG78YTA_utMNLo24zqPyXdOreCBR-MynYNN8jAJHTunsgBbBmT7h_kvTm51gknBWrBR39Uft4ho7HMAh6j3iCtrVGmKW5L7_uCM-h0/s1600/DSCN1948.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6g9OKUmop-nzR9vlVo8YdKkPaK-AR4L5KuaToEEG78YTA_utMNLo24zqPyXdOreCBR-MynYNN8jAJHTunsgBbBmT7h_kvTm51gknBWrBR39Uft4ho7HMAh6j3iCtrVGmKW5L7_uCM-h0/s320/DSCN1948.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Even our bird houses had a few inches of snow on top. I had to clean the snow off the hummingbird feeders so they could get their food.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigiA0xvlqM2PANDQfjRnusBweiKemDtxqk_4GE2PMgum5Zf5CrBDkafnjUFwUu39TkPSk2cWTurJAG1QyJV5ABKyiLCcMHQ4_oARlIyOPYYhusdCYpHI0GsINLIrwO1kja8AnfBv_wvyM/s1600/DSCN1933.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigiA0xvlqM2PANDQfjRnusBweiKemDtxqk_4GE2PMgum5Zf5CrBDkafnjUFwUu39TkPSk2cWTurJAG1QyJV5ABKyiLCcMHQ4_oARlIyOPYYhusdCYpHI0GsINLIrwO1kja8AnfBv_wvyM/s320/DSCN1933.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The miracle about the snow . . .just the day before this world of white was the Spring Open House, where Young Women leaders, and families that have reservations for this year can come and visit the camp. It was cold and raining and blowing, prior to the time the Open House would start. All of us said a prayer that the weather would be tempered. So much work had been done to make the camp in perfect order for these guests. Not even 20 minutes after the prayers were said, a circle of blue sky and sunshine appeared over the camp. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
But the question remained, will they come with the weather having been so bad. Steve and I were assigned to the Smith Pavillion to help answer questions as the guests would come. Just before the start time of 1:00pm I looked out the pavillion window. I couldn't believe it . . .cars were lined up clear down the road approaching the Welcome Center. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Z-msuOmQUAJCunb0_awLP8Kiva-zMq8yzshkeTIFHwEt7Z1Q1lgBwMJyYpfv1_5De28VT9dNV5_bAuC83voLAQdKxpH-VBaMZEYjOU-d8eNINdUwUvjT_fTZ6ta8O7_fVzCx07tyY84/s1600/DSCN1924.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Z-msuOmQUAJCunb0_awLP8Kiva-zMq8yzshkeTIFHwEt7Z1Q1lgBwMJyYpfv1_5De28VT9dNV5_bAuC83voLAQdKxpH-VBaMZEYjOU-d8eNINdUwUvjT_fTZ6ta8O7_fVzCx07tyY84/s320/DSCN1924.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
How could we have ever doubted it! There were over 400 cars that entered into the camp that day, filled with eager, future campers. This is truely the Lord's camp. It has been built, and they will come, and they did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The snow of the next morning was almost a miracle. There could have been snow for the Open House, but no, He held it off until that special day was past, and then sent us a blanket of white to give us the moisture we so badly need.</div>

Challenge Course #5 is the one that has "the big swing". This is very different than the other high courses. You get into a harness and then are pulled high into the air and then released to fly through the air. Steve was very brave! He was pulled to the top and then he did fly. <br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"> What do we do these couple of weeks after we arrive on the <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Mountain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>One might imagine that we sleep in, ride ATV’s, have parties, etc.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nope!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>We train, work, clean, paint, move boats, put away new life vests.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Yep, we are getting ready for those campers
who will soon be here.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>All the
canoes and paddle boats had to be cleaned, moved, and put into the water.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This was fun as we ladies got to paddle the
boats over to the dock.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Before we could
move them, the men had to put new “bushings”, whatever those are, in each
paddle boat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They then had to go and get
the rubber raft, inflate it, and make certain it still floats and still
runs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The next boat they had to<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>get <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>was the big pontoon boat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It had to be launched into the lake and all
the missionaries had to learn to drive it.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>We had
to train the new Sisters how to load and unload campers from the paddle
boats.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There is quite a technique, using
boat hooks, to<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>make certain no one ends
up in the lake instead of the boat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Next
we had to train them in the use of our suction system that is used to clean the
water out of the paddle boats after they are used or when it rains.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I had made certain that I told the new
missionaries that we never get wet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I
cautioned them carefully about positioning their feet and hang on to the poles
on the dock, to be certain not to be pulled into the water.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Well . . .I was in one of the paddle boats,
cleaning it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I pulled up one of the
seats, and stepped back to put the seat down, only to find<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>that I had completely misjudged my position
in the boat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Instead of stepping into
